Directions: Please respond to at least one of the following prompts in a well-developed paragraph.
Has a book ever helped you to think about an issue in your life? Explain.
Reading literature builds empathy. Discuss why this is important.
Pick a passage from the article and respond to it.
I haven't ever had a book do that for help me through an issue in my life. I can understand how it is therapeutic. Though I have not used books for that purpose. It's just that, I personally couldn't even use books for that purpose. For me I have to see action for it to help me. Empathy can be developed through books at certain points on one's life. If you look at the humanistic and behavioral psychological viewpoints the books at like a safe way to comprehend social problems. The article mentions this in the eleventh paragraph. The article calls it a "flight simulator". They say that you can understand "certain issues" without you actually having to be in that or experience the situation yourself. Now I do believe that later on in life it will be harder for empathy to be taught. This is due to the slowing of the inhibition response. Though it is still possible as long as the person searches for the empathy.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on the fact that I never really searched for answers in a book to help me in a situation, well except for the bible but that's an essential for me. Other than that, basic books haven't helped me in that area. I do think that empathy can be taught easily at any age though depending on the person and if their open to it. Like it could also be hard to teach young people empathy too depending on what they've been through and if they decide to open up to it.
DeleteHas a book ever helped me thing about an issue in my life? Maybe not directly, but social interactions are essential in, well, society (surprise, surprise). I’m no social butterfly; I am a social cocoon, and social psychology is a great thing to study for this. Thankfully, I have a General Psychology class (aka PSY150), so I get a ‘free’ book (the textbook) on something that unintentionally helps with social situations .In other worlds, it guides me through situations I wouldn’t otherwise encounter (because they don’t happen in my favorite video games like Mario Sunshine or Galaxy…) so I don’t end up offending someone or completely messing up in general. I suppose for the THINK part of this, I read a passage and think of a situation where I can apply this. Or I think about the passage in an unexpected pop-up. Or, as I try to fall asleep, thinking of all the better things I could be doing, my mind drifts to psychology. In short, social situations are my ultimate weakness, and my psychology helps with that. I know a textbook is an unconventional choice but it has truly helped me more than any other book I have read so far.
ReplyDeleteIs there any fiction books that have helped you? There are many books out there that talk about social awquardess. Though I understand how a factual book can be helpful. It gets straight to the point without having to try to connect as many dots. One thing I would recommend is grab yourself a nice hearty fiction book, and apply psyc 150 to it. It should make connecting the dots easier, and still give you what the article is saying books can do.

The skin I'm in is a book that made me think about my life. It was basically about a young black girl who was very dark skinned and lacked self confidence after her dad died. She battled with her insecurities of being darker than the other girls around her. This book made me a stronger individual and helped build my self confidence. It made me feel proud of being who I am as a black female. I think reading literature to build empathy is important because it allows you to understand and share another person's emotions and feelings. It helps you connect what you read about a character and apply it to a real world problem or situation. Empathy creates connections between people and bring them together which is important to our society today. It create bonds of trust and helps us understand why others react they way they do in a situation. Being able to relate to another person's feelings brings us closer together and spreads humanity. It makes us feel as if someone cares for us.Reading literature to build empathy creates a way for you to connect a situation from a book to your everyday life.
ReplyDeleteI feel like books can pick you up but they can also put you down. In a lot of books the main female character is someone with fair skin whether white or black, she had long flowing hair, and she is described to look like a model with basic life issues such as boys and friends. The main male character is described to be masculine, a womanizer, and fine with basic life issues of girls and sports. Books are based on what will sell and if the media says "pretty" sells the book make they girl "pretty'. How do you with empathy with a person or a character that has so many unrelatable qualities? How do you connect to "world problems" and situations when the only situations their focusing on is their problems and first world problems
DeleteA book hasn't made me think about issues in my life. I don't read books that connect to me and my life. I read book that are so far away from my life, that it takes me to another place. No matter where you get it from, empathy will always be needed. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others, without reading books you may have not been able to connect with someone off of personal experience. Books like "The Autobiography of Malcom X" and "The Color Purple" open up your mind and allow you to feel empathy. People who read these book possibly could've never understood the way racism and hatred because of who you are make people feel.
ReplyDeletePretty good. I do recommend reading more books, and I am being hypocritical in that sense, but it should not take long to find something worthwhile. I recommend The Suffering by Rin Chupeco. All characters in that book have personalities so stretched out, it could reach the moon and come back to earth. It is pretty unique, too. However, if I don’t read The Autobiography of Malcom X or The Color Purple (and any book related, for that matter), why can’t I understand the impact of racism and hatred? There are other means. One last thing that doesn’t really have to do with the response part, but I did notice a few grammatical mistakes. Make sure that if a noun is supposed to be plural, it is plural (ie a book -> books) and the same for singular. Perhaps you could replace the commas (,) with something more fitting. Other than that, not bad!
DeleteI don't recall ever really reading a book that make me think about or help me with me life issues. To be honest, me reading a book is rare because I don't have a long interest span when it comes to reading, so I'll maybe stop in the middle of the book and never get back to it. When I do get caught up in a book, it's usually something that doesn't relate to my life in anyway and then it becomes more interesting for me to read. I can agree with the fact that reading literature does create empathy. I mostly read fan fictions on Watt-pad and the plots of the books be crazy. What the characters go through can definitely cause some emotions in you as well. This is important because in the real world you have to know how to be empathetic towards people, especially when their going through something like the character in your favorite book. The empathy you feel for that character can help you build up that same empathy for people in the real world.
